9 unusual London experiences

***Rachel Khoo would like to thank all the inspiring people who helped make the Khoollect studio a hive of creativity. Although the Khoollect studio’s doors have now closed, you can keep up with Rachel’s newest adventures on RachelKhoo.com and on Rachel’s Instagram and Facebook pages – and, continue to enjoy the Khoollect website’s stories and recipes, which will remain available.***

Everyone has one of those ‘ahead of the trend’ friends who Instagrams themselves at the coolest ‘just-opened’ bars, who manages to get invited to the most exclusive parties or bags tickets to sell-out events. We love ‘em to bits but we’re all wondering: how the hell do they do it?

We’re here to – hopefully – give you the inside scoop on what to try in London so you can have fun with your friends (and feel pretty smug about it).

Here are 9 experiences we think you might like:

Secret Cinema

Secret Cinema is a growing community of all who love cinema, experiences and the unknown. Secret audience. Secret locations. Secret worlds. Tell No One. Our editor-in-chief Rachel Khoo went to The Grand Budapest Hotel event last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dinner at the Twits

Coinciding with Roald Dahl’s 100th year celebration, this is a completely new and limited season event. Come dine with Mr & Mrs Twit in their windowless house and ghastly garden for an evening you will never forget.

The Game’s Afoot

The ultimate Sherlock Holmes whodunnit. Follow in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes and crack the mystery with your fellow Scotland Yard recruits. Interview suspects, read reports, search for hidden clues in the ‘multi-sensory and intricate world’ of Madame Tussauds.

Edible Cinema

Edible Cinema is a unique way to experience a film: through aroma, texture and taste; sounds like our kind of experience! Each guest is supplied with a tray of numbered mystery boxes containing a bite-sized tasting menu tailored to specific moments in the film.

The Romeo and Juliet film-food combo is my favourite.

The Gingerline

This out of this world event fuses together art, performance, food, drink and design. The Ginerline have been increasingly described as ‘the hottest tickets in town’.
This year they’re running an event called Chambers of Flavour vol. 2 which is the second version of their most popular event. Here’s a look into what you’d sign up to:

Shi*tFaced Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Shi*tFaced Shakespeare by Magnificant Bastard Productions combines one of the classics with an entirely sh*tfaced cast member. Before each show, one of the members draws the short straw and has to drink in the hours before the curtain goes up. Following this, the play goes ahead but not always entirely to plan. I’ve seen this, and I must say it was hilarious.

The Festival Of Heat

If you’re a chilli fan, then this will be right up your street. Eating, growing and cooking chilli will be celebrated through live music, food stalls, talks, demonstrations and masterclasses. Will you be turning up the heat on 25th September?

The Ghost Tours London

For people who have lived in London for a long period of time, you forget how amazing the city of London is. This unusual sight-seeing tour is upon a classic route master bus and drives around the darker side of town. Hear stories of murder, torture and execution, with a slice of humour thrown in too.

HintHunt

As simple as the game sounds, it’s not! 3 -5 people are trapped in a room, with mountains of clues surrounding them. They have 60 sweaty minutes to decipher the puzzles and get out. I’ve tried the Zen Room which was set up as a Japanese home, completely equipped with secret sliding doors, puzzle boxes and ornaments which weren’t as they seemed. Communication is paramount!
