A foodies’ mini guide to Sydney

To suggest that Bread, Wine & Thou’s Frances Chapman and Yossi Zoltan Klein know a fair bit about food would be a brash understatement. Not only is Yossi at the helm of one of Australia’s most beautiful food-and-wine publications, but the pair’s knowledge and involvement in the Australian cultural and dining scene is extensive to say the least. Here, we list their tips for places to enjoy the best in eating, drinking and shopping in Sydney:

Breakfast

Two Chaps, Marrickville — trendy and vegetarian, with communal tables set in a warehouse

Excelsior Jones, Ashfield great coffee and always pumping … try the granola or the salmon hash

Three Blue Ducks, Bronte an institution that consistently tops best breakfast lists

Reuben Hills, Surry Hills famous for salted caramel milkshakes

Porch and Parlour, Bondi caters to the Bondi health-conscious with a view over the beach


Dinner

Sepia, Sydney very fine dining indeed, even Melbournians agree that this is one of the best restaurants in the country

Automata, Chippendale an all-round class act

Nel., Sydney dimly lit, with a really, really ridiculously good-looking crowd

Firedoor, Surry Hills wood-fired cooking … the  kitchen contains Argentinean grill with a fire pit  

Corner House, Bondi pizza and share plates, very low key, with a great international wine list

Russo and Russo, Enmore I know, I’ve listed two Italian places, but this place is good


Coffee

Cornersmith, Marrickville also runs cheese-making and pickling classes

Mecca, Ultimo Sydney coffee institution, supplies most cafes in Sydney

The Roots, North Sydney those of us who work in North Sydney were relieved when this place opened

Gratia Café, Surry Hills great coffee, great brunch, and 100 percent of proceeds go to charity to boot

Rabbit Hole Tea Bar, Redfern ideal for those who don’t drink coffee with a gorgeous new fit-out

The Roosevelt, Potts Point run by the folks from Eau de Vie, a Sydney institution

Cured, Manly sells only wine, cheese and meat


Green spaces and parks

Sydney Park, Alexandria great off-leash area for running dogs, fantastic playground for kids of all ages, including a huge sandpit

Bondi to Bronte coastal walk a really nice way to be outdoors, and stop for coffee along the way, or walk all the way to Coogee

Botanic Gardens, Circular Quay has the best view in the city

Wendy Whitely Garden, North Sydney


Boutiques and shops

Koskela, Rosebery homewares, furniture, art, also has a wonderful cafe attached

Collector Store, Surry Hills womens and mens fashion and homewares

Come as You Are, Paddington womenswear including a great range of international brands

Incu, various locations mens and womenswear, international brands, accessories
