The Khoollect team decides: best albums of 2016

From Monday to FriYAY, Team Khoollect love to keep the music flowing at Khoollect HQ. We’re a bunch of music lovers; you’ll often see us bopping along wearing headphones on our commute, or catching a live music gig at the weekend. But, between us, our tastes are diverse.

I asked my team what their favourite albums of the year (so far) have been. Here’s what they said:

Picking my favourite albums of the year is a challenge; there’s been so many exciting releases. But, I’ve managed to narrow it down to just seven albums (ha!). I’ve loved The Drones’ Feelin Kinda Free, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s Nonagon Infinity, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds’ Skeleton Tree, Parquet Courts’ Human Performance, Violent Soho’s Waco, PJ Harvey’s The Hope Six Demolition Project, and (much to my own surprise) Solange’s A Seat at the Table has made lovely background music to work to lately.

This year’s seen some cracking releases but my favourites would have to include Anohni, Hopelessness; I wasn’t sure how his voice would suit the hectic production of TNGHT but I’m a fan of the outcome. Konnichiwa by Skepta was another favourite of mine, because I’m a fan of the whole story; I was pleased to see him win the Mercury Prize. I’ve been listening to Danny Brown’s new project Atrocity Exhibition a lot recently and am really feeling it; you can here the effect of his move to Warp Records, and I’m a fan of it. Another favourite would have to be Tourist’s U…this one got a lot of love over the summer.

If I’m honest I’ve not been very ‘hot’ on new albums this year. However, I do have two 2016 albums that help get my head in the game at work. The first is from Aurora; mostly known for the John Lewis Christmas ad, her voice is quite unusual and her songs such as ‘Running With The Wolves‘ are great to get motivated. The second is Gaprielle Aplin‘s Light Up The Dark. I think I got hooked from watching her music video for ‘Sweet Nothing‘ where she wears a sparkly gold onesie.

I’ve always loved the soft sounds of Daughter and the new album Not to Disappear has been just as poetic and whimsical as their 2013 album, If You Leave. I love this type of music for autumnal wanderings – when the cold mornings need a gentle awakening.
