On a week where Khoollect HQ is embracing BREAKFAST (my favourite meal) in all its forms, I’m reaching for my old copy of Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.

There’s two reasons for this. Firstly, the moral of the story, which I credit with giving me the gumption to embrace food in all its forms from a young age. Secondly, child or adult, it’s a great book to start your day and will undoubtedly leave you with a smile on your face.

What’s it all about?

In case you haven’t read it, the plot is as follows: Sam-I-am, a sort of furry creature, asks a miserable grouch (another furry creature) to try green eggs and ham. There follows an extensive list of refusals; the grouch won’t try the food anywhere or with anyone, not in a house or a box, not with a mouse or a fox (you get the idea).

Sam-I-am perseveres valiantly, and finally the green eggs and ham is tried and despite his initial protestations, the grouch LOVES it. Thus proving we can’t really know if we like something unless we try it. I believe this doesn’t have to apply to food alone.

Is it worth reading?

This is not only a practical and useful book, which has been lauded for bringing confidence to early readers with its repetition of simple words and their memorable rhyming patterns, but is also a memorable poem and an iconic book. The combination of fantastical images, primary colourways and the infectious rhythm of the piece envelops you in the fearless, whimsical madness that is the world of Dr. Seuss.

This book is a classic for a reason. It functions well on an educational level, entertains brilliantly, and engages both children and adults with its liberating lunacy.

And it goes really well with eggs and bacon.
