Kitchen Details: Why We Chose The Modern Country Kitchen Trend

When we were thinking of our Khoollect kitchen, there was only ever one look Editor-in-Chief Rachel Khoo was considering – modern country. By choosing deVOL, with their focus on classic craftsmanship with a modern edge, she felt her aesthetic was reflected perfectly.

The Modern Country tends to be muted colours, a good combination of natural textures with modern accents with a lot of room to add personality and with this kitchen, we’ve got all of that with a typical R Khoo twist.

It’s not just style that we wanted though, this is going to be a working kitchen and with it, we needed things that were going to be durable enough to last through constant shoots. Enough space within it to compensate for the tiny interior we’re working in and a look that will outlive trends while still keeping fresh. That’s why the modern country look just works so well in this space. We’ll run you how to get the modern country look:

Rustic details:
With modern country you can go one of two ways – distressed wood or rustic details (or both actually). Rachel chose to go with reclaimed but not distressed wood and rustic details like these Aged handles, brass taps and a ceramic sink big enough to wash more than we could ever comfortably eat… well, probably. These give the effect of those huge lived-in family country homes, even in a small space.

Modern storage solutions:
With its inbuilt integrated appliances, hidden compartments and huge storage space, all of our modern necessities were covered, like our incognito SMEG fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, so we had enough freedom to go rustic with the detailing.

Open shelves:
If there’s one thing you should know about Editor-in-Chief Rachel Khoo, is that although she’s lived in tiny places for most of her life, she’s managed to build up a pretty impressive prop collection but with all the storage in this kitchen, you’d never know. Although we love the look of modern classic kitchens looking lived in, we needed a lot of storage space to conceal the pieces we didn’t want on show to be able to display the props and artwork that we did on the open shelves – like our Swedish tins and kilner jars. A styling dream come true…

Classic cabinets:
To us a Shaker kitchen is modern country. Simple, sophisticated but classic enough to fit in any country home, there really was no other choice that we wanted. Typically for the modern country look you’d keep these neutral colours like white, cream or grey or as in our case, go for a muted colour – like mint green or duck egg blue.

Kitchen island:
Is there anything more country home than a kitchen island? We don’t think so. Not only does it make the most of the space itself but it also gives us enough room to manoeuvre multiple people food styling and cooking in a small area.
