Podcasts to inspire: the secret to a better day

***Rachel Khoo would like to thank all the inspiring people who helped make the Khoollect studio a hive of creativity. Although the Khoollect studio’s doors have now closed, you can keep up with Rachel’s newest adventures on RachelKhoo.com and on Rachel’s Instagram and Facebook pages – and, continue to enjoy the Khoollect website’s stories and recipes, which will remain available.***

What do you listen to when you’re commuting, working out or sitting at your desk? It’s easy to put on a playlist and mindlessly listen to the charts, but I think the secret to a more valuable day is this: podcasts. Click on the podcast app that you might have hid from your phone screen initially (guilty as charged), and put it on the first page of your phone. In fact, put it where your Instagram, Facebook or Twitter app is.

Podcasts can help boost your creativity, or help you to subconsciously learn about new and innovative things as you go about your day. Here are my top picks:

The Minimalists

Joshua and Ryan are The Minimalists. Two inspiring guys who’ve learned to live a more meaningful life with less stuff and more intention. The message here is, literally, less is more. They talk about their journey to Minimalism and how, worldwide, we have become obsessed with ownership instead of enjoying what really matters. A truly inspiring and life-changing podcast. Be sure to explore their books and website too.

The Lively Show

A new addition to my podcast feed – a light and uplifting listen that focuses on being more thoughtful throughout our lives. Much like The Minimalists, host Jess focuses on the things that make us happy and help us to feel more enriched in our day-to-day lives, while also drawing on the experiences of others who are doing the same thing.

Monocle: The Menu

Although the presenter sounds a little like a 70s game-show host, Monocle’s ‘The Menu’ is your ticket into the world of food and drink across the globe. It features everything and everyone from entrepreneurs such as Brew Dog founder James Watt, to tiny craft beer companies that use one special ingredient. This podcast provides you with a healthy dollop of wanderlust and a greater appreciation for food.

FOUNDR

Nathan Chan hosts the most business-savvy podcast around, interviewing entrepreneurs celebrated in their fields. It’s intelligent, relatable and well curated. He shares the secrets of how to leave your 9am to 5pm job and start something you are passionate about, by providing you with the tools you need to do it.

Woman’s Hour

Offering a female perspective on the world, Woman’s Hour plays host to a wonderful collection of topics. The kind of podcast you listen to while cooking dinner, there’s something for everyone: a bit of humour, serious news bulletins, interviews with interesting people, and general chitchat from the presenters. It’s easy listening and appears in your feed daily.

Serial

Serial is probably the most thrilling of all these suggestions. It requires more attention, so is ideal lazy Sunday listening. Serial tells true stories (always a mystery) over the course of a season, which are exciting, a little scary and thought provoking all at once. Each episode is captivating to listen to with the voice of Sarah Koenig, who leaves us thirsty for the next installment.

Food for Thought: The Joys and Benefits of Living Vegan

An insightful podcast by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, delving into the truths and myths of living a vegan life and leaving you armed with knowledge and understanding. (Perfect for those plant-based eaters facing tough questions from family members and friends!).

Stuff Mom Never Told You

A fun, intelligent and interesting podcast for women covering a range of topics from biology, to emojis, to business. Hosted by the witty and down-to-earth pair, Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin.
