Well I most like to bake and my baking cupboard is awash with ingredients, some quite specialist and others run of the mill. I try to always have at least 3 kinds of chocolate, various types of sugar and flour and then a host of nuts, extracts etc.

When it comes to evening meals, I make a lot of curries (Rick Stein’s most recent book on the subject is fantastic) and as the weather has taken a turn for the better, lots of salads and grilled meats are really ticking all the right boxes for me at the moment 🙂

Sounds great! Love the idea of having all that chocolate 🙂

Have you heard of Meera Sodha? I also love Indian cooking and her new book is coming out tomorrow which I can’t wait for. I’m hoping it’ll have some salads and things in there as her last book had great ones. This is her website: http://meerasodha.com/

I’d love to, but I have to pop home and walk the dog, which I do to relax 🙂 How long will you be around?

My 5 essential ingredients would be: extra virgin olive oil, whole grain flour, rolled oats, basil, and apples!
I could probably add more but I will stop there. I want to get a tomato plant for my terrace! I will look into those planters too.

Thanks for your input Lisa! Have you tried growing plants before? A terrace would be perfect for tomatoes. I attempted to grow plants in my parking space last year (I don’t have a car or outside space) – I think people thought I was slightly strange…!

Hannah, plants in your parking space is amazing! What a great idea.

I used to have a backyard so I had a full garden bed with many vegetables, planters with herbs, and fruit trees.

Now I am limited to my terrace so currently I just have a bunch of herbs (in terms of edible plants), but I am hoping to plant some vegetables as well!

Are you growing plants this year as well?

Hi Akshay – I’m the same with you, chillis are a must have. I have chilli plants growing in my kitchen which is always handy!

Lisa – I’m not growing any plants this year, apart from the chilli plants inside. Unfortunately the weather hasn’t been very good here and there’s just not been the time. I’ve applied for an allotment though! It could be up to 5 years until I get one… Have you thought about an allotment?

    Hi there!
This looks like an old forum but the last khoollect email brought me here and since I love cooking, I thought I’d share my 5 ingredient must-haves…

    1) chilli – fresh, pickled, dried, as a sauce. It can add life to a dish whether sweet, spicy or hot hot hot but chilli doesn’t have to blow your socks off – I think people get scared of it so skip over it because they’re not sure.
    2) eggs – use them for sweet or savoury dishes, by themselves or as an integral component- these have to be my must have, must have ingredients – if that makes sense?!
    3) extra virgin olive oil – goes into so many of my sweet and savoury dishes as well as salads and a drizzzle across fresh bread – yum!
    4) ginger – fresh, ground, crystallised, preserved – such a versatile & yummy ingredient for savoury and sweet dishes.
    5) seasonal fruit – ok this is cheating a bit in that it’s more than one ingredient but it is so essential to my cooking. At the moment autumn quinces are beautiful (winter has just begun here) and I’m going quince nuts experimenting with slow baked lamb necks with quince tonight, last week beautiful ruby red quince paste…what will next week bring?!

Feeling so very lucky to have access to beautiful ingredients from my garden as well as the local markets 🙂
