Let’s face it, there’s a reason they call it the ‘silly season’ — and, as our annual post-festive-feasting-and-drinking feels would indicate, holidays can be hard on our health and, naturally, our skin. Of course, this doesn’t have to be the case. There are preventative measures we can take to keep our faces feeling nourished all season long. And, to avoid waking up on Boxing Day with extra puffy eyes, dark circles, blemishes and dry patches, we’ve put together a list of our silly season beauty secrets to ensure we spring into the new year fresh-faced:

  • Schedule sleep in your holiday diary
The silly season can be an especially busy time on the calendar. Between Christmas parties, end-of-year get-togethers, dinners, drinks, and travels, you’re bound to be feeling a little exhausted by the time the new year rolls around. To avoid running yourself down (and inviting the dreaded Christmas colds to find you), ensure you’re getting as much sleep as you can. Beauty sleep is essential at this time of year.
  • Maintain balanced eating habits
This is certainly easier said than done during the festive season (what with all the extra treats around and party invitations coming in). But, to keep your skin feeling great, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re getting your fair share of nutrient-rich meals in too (and, you know, not eating chocolate for breakfast, as you may want to). If you’re eating out in bars and restaurants a lot this year, try to select healthier, lighter options (at least for every second meal). And, where possible, pack lunches and healthy snacks in your bag, to avoid getting ravenously hungry and tucking into something much naughtier. Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you skip the fun foods entirely. That would be very hypocritical of us.
  • Keep it clean
No matter how tired you are, or how late you get home of an evening, it’s always important to wash off your make-up. You’ll thank yourself the next morning. If you know you might be home late, you could keep a pack of make-up removing wipes and a nice, reviving moisturiser next to your pillow to eliminate any excuses!
  • Replenish (especially the morning after the night before)
We all make mistakes: devouring a little too much prosecco, snacking on a few too many chocolate truffles, or tasting a little too much of the cheese platter. The good news is, you can treat your body (and your skin) to a healthy break the next day. Try making a smoothie by blending up your favourite greens with a banana and some almond milk to top up on those nutrients. Then, make sure you drink plenty of water to flush all the toxins away. If you’re not a big fan of drinking water, throw in some lemon and mint to make it more appealing.
  • Pack properly
At this time of year, many of us head home for the holidays or take a trip away. To ensure your beauty regime doesn’t get left behind, be sure to pack make-up remover, a good cleanser, a nice moisturiser and perhaps a multivitamin supplement if you’re bound to misbehave. Making sure you’ve got everything on hand to keep your skin looking its best is easy. If you don’t have a lot of luggage space, simply decant your products into smaller bottles and jars, or purchase products that can double up and do two jobs in one.
  • Hydrate, every day
It may seem obvious, but stepping away from your routine can mean forgetting to keep your good habits going. It’s a good idea to carry a water bottle wherever you go, and try to avoid excessive amounts of alcohol, coffee and other drinks that can dehydrate your skin. For good measure, layer on a hydrating face mask once a week to give your skin a nourishing drink and dab on some facial oil for extra shine.
