The lass who found her niche in knitwear
A girly 5 days with the 14yr old daughter on the Rive Gauche. Day 2 : 8:30pm , we’re getting hungry and the idea of “dropping into a local bistro” is proving impossible. Everywhere is heaving, there doesn’t seem to be an unoccupied table on the whole of the left bank. ( It’s Bastille Day on Friday and Paris is just about popping at the seams). We contemplate going to the local Carrefour, then wander down a partially enclosed alley. As we come out of the enclosed space there is an attractive looking place with several free tables under an awning outside: the waiter says “yes, I have room for you” and we are seated at last at a generous table with the promise of food. If only we’d known! The sights and aromas of the food served to neighbouring tables inspired the daughter ( who had been vegetarian for 2 years at this point ) to order Onglet with caramelized shallots and French fries. The “assortiment de glaces et sorbet maison” was heavenly; the cassis sorbet had an elegance and aroma those who really know fresh, ripe fruit will recognize: just caught on the point of perfect ripeness, cascading into waves of perfumed deliciousness( I suspect there were some leaves in the mix too). Service was outstanding, the house wine was delicious, and the daughter sampled her first ever cognac( whilst I was away from the table). As we left I looked back at the awning to check where we’d eaten for future reference: Le Procope!
Thanks so much for the tip Debra!
