I trialled lots of ramen joints and really enjoyed them, however my favourite was a simple meal of grilled sardine with terrikayi sauce, rice, pickles and miso soup, in a port town at a family-owned restaurant. Teamed with an Asahi beer, it was incredible.
Fingers crossed I can win this book and try to recreate some of the recipes at home!

My most treasured Japanese meals have been prepared for me by my Japanese friends. Hideaki Kobayashi is an artist and Aikido teacher. He made a wonderful Japanese dumplings entree, with various fillings including octopus and sausage. The dumplings are cooked in a little hotplate with small spheres, which are filled with the fresh batter and fillings; little bit sized morsels.
My other Japanese friend Kazuaki Tanahashi is a world renowned artist, author and peace activist. Being the earliest to rise in the household, he has a lovely way of presenting breakfast ready on the table every morning for the family and myself when I was a guest in his home. He made fresh fruit, yogurt and muesli for us all, ready for when we awoke for the day.
