Those daydreaming of starting their own businesses can often get swept up in the romance of doing their own thing. But, unfortunately it’s not all about creating art and seeing your customers’ proudly parading your wares. Someone who knows what it’s really like to set up shop, quite literally, Anna of Able and Game shares her tips for running a creative business:

  1. Make friends
Make friends with other small business owners. Meet up with them regularly and chat business. They will often have ways to solve problems you have, and think of things you might not have considered.
  2. Plan ahead
Set aside money early on to outsource jobs you don’t like or are not good at. Try and budget for it early, so you don’t think you can’t afford it later on.
  3. Consider your workload
Sure, help from family and friends is awesome, but if you’re regularly getting help from people and not paying them, or budgeting for this, it might cause problems when you start to scale up or they can no longer do the hours. One-off assistance for events or during a busy period is one thing, but hours of work each week could end up causing financial issues down the track.
  4. Be social
Get on social media and have a presence on the internet where people can buy your product without too much hassle.
  5. Enjoy yourself
Have fun and try not to get too stressed out about things!
