Why Roof Windows Are The Key To Your Dream Kitchen

Interior furnishings are all well and good, but the one thing that makes the most difference to the overall feeling of a room = light. Daylight, if we’re going to be more specific. While opening up and extending your space can help, nothing will work wonders as instantly as VELUX roof windows…

If you’re anything like us, the kitchen is the central part of your house. It’s where you can connect with your family after a hard days work, pass on traditions of generations worth of recipes and make new memories over your favourite shared meals; that’s why in our opinion, it needs to stand out more than most.

Plus, for us, we had the added challenge of having our kitchen as a working studio for filming and photo shoots, and the previous Khoollect HQ take a look below (and at the video here) was pretty dark. Natural light was at a minimum only coming from a couple of windows which were facing a neighbouring wall (being a ground floor flat of a Victorian terrace which is quite standard), which was less than ideal. So we needed something that would fix our lighting issues and work with our limited space.

There were lots of options that we could have gone for ranging from an all-glass roof to giant skylights but in the end, VELUX roof windows were the perfect option for a number of reasons. Roof windows allow us a lot more control over the light we’ll be working with on a daily basis, especially considering their blinds and awnings and the welcome fact that you’re able to open them with a remote control (with a load of customisable options).

One thing Khoollect HQ needed was flexibility and VELUX’s roof windows were able to give us just that. We needed our kitchen to sit on the outside wall, something that simply wasn’t possible with an all-glass roof. Plus, an all-glass roof may look great but as we’re living in a fairly filthy city with a lot of rainfall (we’re in London after all) most of the time it will just look muddied whereas these windows are incredibly easy to clean – practical is our middle name.

Apart from the challenges of the weather, living in London means we’re surrounded by other properties and everyone needs a little privacy. Being able to adjust the blinds with a touch of a button was a must.

On top of all that, we also had the issue of ventilation. You might not immediately think of it but filming while cooking without enough ventilation can lead to a whole lot of frustration and time wasted with misty lenses. Editor-in-Chief Rachel Khoo had already decided not to go for an extractor fan over the island hob due to it being quite unsightly, especially when you need to film certain angles, so the VELUX windows opening from above, completely without obstruction, will solve that.

Now we’ve talked about the practicalities, we also wanted a solution that added atmosphere and we got that in abundance. There’s something about being able to see the sky from your living space that makes you feel a lot calmer, more at home, and who wouldn’t want that?
