For any of you in London or those of you planning to be, a visit to the Geffrye Museum is a beautiful way to taste local culture from an historical perspective. We took a tour through the museum to discover what it had to offer and to share our experience. Open from 10.00am  to 5.00pm, Tuesday through Sunday, it’s a perfect little getaway from the hustle and bustle of its locale. Explore the period rooms and wander the garden, but before you do – here’s a few Geffrye Museum tips for your visit:

  • During the summer months, don’t miss the award-winning walled herb garden and series of period town gardens behind the museum.
  • On certain days every month there are special tours of one of the 18th-century almshouse, which has been restored to its original condition to give a rare glimpse into the lives of London’s poor and elderly in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
  • Visit after 3.00pm on a weekday for a peaceful visit after the groups and school children have gone.
  • Explore the paintings collections, which depict interiors and gardens from 1600 to the present day.
  • Tuck into delicious offerings in the cafe and hunt for unusual gifts, homewares, books and cards in the shop.
  • Check out the annual Christmas exhibition, when the period rooms sparkle with authentic festive decorations to reflect 400 years of Christmas celebrations and traditions.
