Five things to do at your desk today

If sitting at your desk for eight or more hours a day makes you feel like the emotional equivalent of an over-stuffed suitcase, then it’s time to switch up your routine. Avoid feeling like a zombie come 5pm by following these few simple tips.

Stretch 
Listen to the wise words of Taylor Swift and ‘shake it off’. Wave your legs around or do the invisible hoola hoop. Getting some movement in your body reminds you that you can move; it gets your blood flowing and helps you unravel from your hunched stature. There are loads of basic stretches you can try.

Read a few pages of a book
When your eyes are glued to the screen all day, you start to see the world as a series of boxes. Read a few pages of a book, preferably a real book, to focus your eyes and attention on something easier to digest.

Doodle 
The rise of adult colouring books has proven that we all need something creative in our lives. Doodling is said to increase your attention span, so why not.

Change your environment
Get a change of scenery on your lunch break. Go for a walk, hit the gym, put on your running shoes, or just pop out and browse at some shops. Fresh air and a complete change helps to refocus the mind.

Make yourself lunch
Taking five minutes to make a cup of tea or assemble your sandwich at lunch can be a welcome change of activity if you’ve been parked at a desk for hours at a time. If you don’t need to make lunch, find something else practical to do: a craft project, knitting, planning your personal calendar, and so on.
