During the 1940’s when I was 8 years old, my family took a “staycation”. We lived in Detroit, Michigan and my parents took us to the Detroit Institute of Arts (free), Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village (minimum cost), and the grand opening of the Twin Pines milk company (free) where we drank as much as we wanted of the chocolate milk from tiny glass milk bottles. I remember little about other trips we took, but I’ll never forget looking at the Italian Suits of Armor at the DIA and thinking how small people were in those days.
Growing up in a working class, blue collar community, it didn’t occur to me until years later that my neighborhood friends and classmates weren’t exposed to the opportunities I had. And to this day, I still appreciate the exposure my parents afforded me that year.
Thanks for sharing, Janet. This is a beautiful memory.
I love taking a favorite book or my AlphaSmart to the local dock with a brownbag lunch and iced tea. I spend my time reading or writing whichever I’m in the mood for.
Sounds very relaxing, Pat!
