DIY: Bird Cake Decorations

When winter comes, our little feathered friends struggle to find a food and water source to support their families. The shorter days and cold temperatures makes a bird’s day increasingly tricky – which is why they need our help. Last year as part of Canon’s #selfieless deeds campaign, we created this bird feeder bauble recipe to make others aware of the birds’ seasonal struggle. Canon then donated our normal partnership fee to The Red Cross charity so the money can go towards a further charitable cause.

But just because it’s so last year doesn’t mean you can’t get involved again this Christmas! Whether you live in a country garden or a city flat, you can easily whip up these foodie treat for the birds:

Bird feed DIY

You will need:

For 6 cakes

250g lard
350g bird seed
150g cranberries
6 muffin cases
Twine

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Combine the bird seed and cranberries in a large bowl.
  2. Pierce a hole in the bottom of 6 muffin cases and thread through some twine – creating a knot at the end.
  3. Melt the large in a saucepan and pour into your dry ingredients bowl.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases and leave in the fridge overnight to harden.
  5. Cut off the muffin cases and hang outside for the birds!
